The 2018-2022 World Cup bid race; a new football landscape?

Hi everyone,

The FIFA World Cup has proven to be an amazing marketing platform, but also a way to boost local economy and to promote a country image worldwide. World Cup 2014 will take place in Brazil, countries are now fiercely bidding for the 2018-2022 World Cup. In order to to give a fair chance to all bidders, FIFA setup new rules: Now bidding parties cannot talk to any of the 24 executive committee members without submitting a written request. Next, FIFA  kicked off a  two-month inspection to visit the  the nine candidates racing to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

FIFA appointed six football experts, led by Chilean Football Federation President Harold Mayne-Nicholls, counting in his team South Africa 2010 chief executive Danny Jordaan.  They will visit Japan, South Korea, Australia, the Netherlands-Belgium, Russia, England, Spain-Portugal, the United States and Qatar to inspect stadiums and other facilities.

I should add that Japan, South Korea, Australia and Qatar, all members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), submitted bids for 2022 World Cup only. England, Russia, the United States, Spain-Portugal (joint bid) and the Netherlands-Belgium (joint bid) are bidding to host either 2018 or 2022 . If a european country wins the 2018 bid, the continent will be excluded from the 2022 race…..which makes sense.

I will keep a strong scrutiny on the FIFA delegation country visit agenda, knowing that it will be in England between August 23rd and 26th.

I am looking forward to the final result. We are going to assist to a potential new football landscape. With Qatar offering a top class elite bid (check out the below video), Australia that never organised a World Cup but has huge facilities and venues,  we could see a drastic change in World Cup venues.

Europe organised the World Cup in 2006, and if the rotation system still prevails, my take would go for the US in 2018  (last organised in 1994) and why not Qatar for 2022 to represent the Asian continent?

As usual, your thoughts are welcome!

  1. There are nice stadiums in Qatar. Really, I like it. Bit I am just scary about players.
1.reason: There will be too hot weather
2.reason: I am scary about robbers.

I think, I’d give it to Belgium. Small, but nice country. Even if, the problems are big. They want to separate and thi is not good message.

  2. Hi Tomas,
It can be really hot in EAU in summer (approx 40°C) and it is an important factor to consider indeed. However, I am not sure there are more thieves in Qatar more than anywhere else.
Belgium on its own does not have enough stadiums matching FIFA criterias to organise a World Cup, hence the joint bid with The Netherlands.
