No, no article (yet) about Russia and Qatar, World Cup 2018-2022 bidding winners. However, I would like to outline here Eurosport commitment to show the French Ligue 1 Orange in Germany, Austria and Luxembourg.
The channel signed off on a deal with the French Football League (LFP) and Canal+, the Ligue 1 rights holder. The package includes one live fixture from a week from France’s top flight, along with highlights and preview content. These will be available to viewers of the Eurosport television channel and Eurosport Player, with additional video footage available on the Yahoo! Eurosport website in Germany.
Following last weekend’s coverage of the second half of the match between Paris St Germain and Olympique Lyonnais, the first full fixture broadcast will be Sunday’s encounter between OGC Nice and Olympique Marseille. The deal is scheduled to run until the end of the 2011/12 season.
Strong initiative from Eurosport and the LFP to promote the Ligue 1 in those markets. Indeed, the french league lacks of appeal in those countries. It’s a long way to the Euro 2016, organised in France, and promoting the french league now is a significant move. I have been very critical on the LFP decisions – or should I say lack of decision on crucial french football matter, but on this one, it’s a smart and efficient move. Let’s hope they keep on that way!
