The final installment of the “England Matters” video series features behind the scenes footage from the senior nternational England football team’s 4-1 win over Montenegro and 2-0 victory over Poland en route to qualification.
With well over 200 caps between them, few are better placed than Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Ashley Cole to provide insight into life as an England international, and the pride, drive and ambition it takes to be a part of the team.
“As a footballer, you play to win trophies and be successful,” said Wayne Rooney. “If you look at all the great players, they all have special moments of their own. As a center forward, you’ve always got that opportunity to create your own history, which is also obviously your country’s history.”
“England Matters: Chapter Three” sees England secure qualification, with emerging talents Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck and Andros Townsend at the forefront.
Ashley Cole welcomes the influx of youth into the England set-up, but also emphasises the value of experience:
“It’s easy for me to tell these young guys how tough it’s going to be, but until you’ve been there and done it, you’re never going to realize how difficult these situations are.”
Jack Wilshere echoes Cole’s thoughts on the need for a balanced squad at next year’s tournament:
“Rooney is the great example you know, near on 80 caps and he’s only 28. He broke into the team when he was 18. He’s been playing for 10 years and he can pass his experience onto us young players”.
With fierce competition for places in the squad mounting ahead of next summer, Theo Walcott looks back to his early days as an England international and reveals how the emergence of the next generation of talent serves to raise standards:
“When I first came onto the scene I just played with no fear, and that’s exactly what you see when these players come in. These are great opportunities for a lot of these players because if you’re good enough, the manager’s going to pick you. Everybody’s competing for places here and that’s going to make you into a better player.” [Source: Nike.com]
