The new Major League Soccer franchise, New York City FC, will kick off their debut season next year at Yankee Stadium. It was a pending decision, and so far, NYCFC will play at the home of the New York Yankees.
The ground is home of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees, who co-own the MLS franchise with former Premier League champions Manchester City.
Claudio Reyna, sporting director of New York City, said: “By having our home facility at Yankee Stadium, we feel even more confident that we’ll be able to attract top-level talent from around the world to our organisation.
“Top athletes want the opportunity to showcase their talents at the world’s most famous sports venues, and Yankee Stadium is such a venue.”
The capacity of the stadium will be reduced down to 33,444 for MLS matches from 49,642 when the baseball team plays – The upper tiers will be closed off to achieve this
Plans for a soccer-specific stadium are continuing, although no time set has been announced for a new stadium, or for how long the soccer team will stay at Yankees Stadium.
