Nike signed a sponsorship deal with the FA in September 2012, replacing a 50 year partnership between Umbro and the English FA. The swoosh released yesterday the first episode of “England Matters”.

After signing Manchester City and the English FA, Nike partners with Blackburn Rovers, a former Umbro asset. Blackburn Rovers confirmed a new partnership that will see the club’s kit sponsorship move from Umbro to the Nike brand from the start of the 2013-14 season.

I published an article in June about Nike divorcing Umbro, after having taken over Umbro’s major football assets Manchester City and the English FA. This week, Nike has announced that it has reached an agreement to sell Umbro to Iconix Brand Group in a US$225 million deal.

It’s now official, Nike will be the England FA official kit supplier and will design and create football gear for England teams for all categories: Men, Women, Youth. The first kits are to be launched in spring 2013.
Huge news today. Nike is supposedly on the verge to replace Umbro as official kit supplier for the England National Team. According to various sources, Nike could launch a new England kit as early as next May despite the contract linking Umbro to the England football team until 2018.

Euro 2012 is one week away, and here’s a quick review of the team sponsors visibility during the event. After a 100% adidas Champions League final, what does Euro 2012 tell us from a National Teams sponsorship perspective?
From 2013-2014 season onwards, Nike will be Manchester City official kit supplier. Not so much of a surprise as Umbro is part of the Nike Group, and it was -to me – just a matter of time until Manchester City endorse Nike gear.
